Port Kaituma: The Community Beyond the Tragedy of the Sunken Ferry
The sinking of the MV Barima ferry off Guyana’s Atlantic coast in July brought attention to several aspects of the country’s water transport systems that support the movement of passengers and cargo to coastal, riverain, and hinterland communities. Port Kaituma, the gateway to Guyana’s interior is home to many of the people affected by the tragedy. Guyana Tapestry’s visit highlighted the community’s people, geography, challenges, and deep connection to coastal and river transportation.
